Departure is a multi-disciplinary firm experienced in residential, commercial and hospitality projects. The name Departure represents a shift from conventional firm models and philosophies and their limitations.
Because we make ‘places’ for people, consideration for the overall body, mind, and spirit - particularly in residential projects - is paramount and incorporated thoughtfully and appropriately into every commission. A successful ‘place’ not only allows us to feel better but also creates a healthy environment within which we can realize our potentials.
With more than 31 years of diverse experience in all project types and sizes, Departure brings a sophisticated level of experience to all projects with which we’re involved. In recent years, our projects have focused on single-family, multi-family and mixed-use projects, with commissions mainly with real estate developers and private individuals.
Our approach to all design work is collaborative. We achieve the best results when we work with our clients and entire design team to fully understand the project scope and possibilities. The objective in our design process is then to uncover – not impose - the solution. This solution – from initial design stages through the completed design - is then communicated to our clients utilizing the latest computer-modeling technologies to ensure that the design direction of a project is made collectively with our clients.
Because the project team is vital to a successful outcome, our relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors are critical. The result has been longstanding relationships based on mutual respect and a cooperative spirit.
Our commitment to the betterment of the environment is incorporated into every project that we undertake. With strong backgrounds in sustainability, including LEED-certification, we always encourage environmental sensitivity. This topic is vast and can mean many things from site orientation for passive solar systems, to indoor air quality, recycling of construction waste, and the use of ‘green’ building materials and construction methods. This list is limitless and each project brings its own unique and appropriate approach to these opportunities.
